We are overloaded with cats and kittens. Unless we find them permanent or temporary homes, most of them will be euthanized. Please, help us and the animals we are desperately trying to save.

Sunday July 20th,2008 between 12 and 3pm at the pound : Come and see who would like to come home with you! We are available for adoptions weekday between the hours of 8-10am and every Saturday between 11pm-1 pm. If those hours are not convenient for you please call to schedule an appointment.
We have lots of beautiful cats and dogs- please help us make space for more incoming pets and adopt or foster a furry friend. If you are thinking about adopting a cat, please bring a secure carrier. Please note that we may have other cats and dogs available for adoption and looking for homes, that might not yet be listed online. We try to keep the site updated as best we can.

ATTENTION CAT LOVERS!!! WE ARE LOADED WITH BEAUTIFUL FRIENDLY YOUNG ADULT CATS. PLEASE REMEMBER ONE OF OUR CATS OR TELL A FRIEND. WE HAVE ONLY 14 DAYS WHEN WE ARE FULL BEFORE WE ARE SUPPOSED TO EUTHANIZE THE CATS THAT HAVE BEEN HERE THE LONGEST. IF YOU CAN FOSTER A CAT, CONTACT US !!!!!

Some are very shy and need some socialization, but would come around much faster in a home environment and could use a break from the shelter and the cage. Some are fearful being caged around so many other animals. Please call Justine at 973-208-1989 for more info on fostering. Fostering can save a life: and make yours richer! Give a day or so for a return call, as the caretakers are so busy......

Who We Are

Jefferson Muncipal Pound is a municipal pound staffed by 1 full time and one part time animal caretaker.

Adopting a friend

We do not require an adoption fee, but a donation is greatly appreciated and goes directly towards providing veterinary care for the animals. All animals must be spayed/neutered if they have not been done prior to adoption, and animals adopted from us can be neutered for $20 under the state program at a participating veterinarian. We do our best to match the right animal with the right home, and we reserve the right to refuse any adoption if we do not feel the animal will work out in your home. If you are interested in a dog, please fill out an application online before calling or visiting the shelter- this will help us to learn more about you and determine whether or not the dog you are interested in is right for your household. Please note that all adopted cats or kittens must leave the premises in a cat carrier. We may choose to decline an adoption if the cat or kitten cannot be safely transported to the new home.

Since we are a municipal facility, we cannot afford to provide veterinary care for every animal. Adopters shouldabsolutely take the animal to the vet within 7 days for a check-up. The pound makes no guarantees about the health of the animal you are adopting and cannot be held responsible for any vet bill incurred once an animal is adopted. Any animals adopted from the pound may be returned to us if there is a problem. We will ALWAYS take our animals back into our care. Please never hesitate to contact us with questions or if you need to return a pet.

Volunteering and Donations

We encourage volunteers to help socialize our animals, particularly the cats and kittens. Volunteers should realize, however, that the municipality does not cover or have insurance against personal injury.

Donations are always appreciated. Our wish list: towels & blankets,canned food ( preferably better grade, since cheap food gives them stomach distress), kitty litter,treats, money; etc. 100% of funds donated to the pound will go DIRECTLY toward veterinary care, shots, and spaying/neutering.

Our hours are weekdays from 8AM-10AM. We realize these hours are very limited, so if these are not convenient please call the shelter at 973-663-3241 to make an appointment. For cat adoptions, you can call Justine at 973-208-1989 to make an appointment. Because we have only one FT and one PT employee, we are not always able to respond immediately.
Directions from 80 east or west:
Take Route 80 to Route 15 north.
Take the jug handle at Berkshire Valley Road and cross back over route 15. Continue on Berkshire Valley Road for a mile to Minnisink Road. Make a right onto Minnisink Road then a mile on the left you will see a gray building with a blue reflective sign with the number 57 on it. This is the Jefferson Township Health Dept. Building. Pull in the driveway and drive to the back, behind the salt shed and there you are.
